Question

Individuals with diabetes are at an increased risk of developing foot problems which can cause a decrease in the amount of blood flow to feet. Nerve damage often occurs, and individuals develop diabetic neuropathy which is decreased sensation in their lower extremities, often feeling numbness or tingling. "High blood sugar levels caused by diabetes can damage the nerves and blood vessels in your body" (Pagan and Dansinger, para. 6, 2021). Having decreased sensation puts individuals at risk for developing burns, injuries, ulcers, and infections.

"Not having enough blood flowing to your legs and feet can make it hard for a sore or an infection to heal" (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Diseases, para. 3, 2017). This can often lead to a condition known as gangrene which can potentially lead to an amputation. "Peripheral artery disease can narrow the arteries that carry blood to your legs and feet and make you more likely to get ulcers (open sores) and infections" (Pagan and Dansinger, para. 5, 2021).
