As part of the respiratory vital sign assessment of Rebecca (preferred pronouns: she, her), a 60-year-old female client, the nurse is preparing to observe her respiration pattern. The nurse received a report from the previous shift that states that Rebecca is breathing "normally." The nurse has also taken note of Rebecca's assessment history and baseline. Rebecca's upper chest is observed to be moving when she breathes in and out with a pause between breathing cycles that appears to repeat consistently. Rebecca's expiration of air is longer than her inspiration of air.
