Problem

A 26 year old female patient reports to her obstetrician during her seventh month of pregnancy for a routine visit. Her only concern is that she has experienced painful, burning and frequent urination for the past few days. The routinely voided urine sample yielded positive results for nitrate and leukocyte esterase. Upon receipt of the specimen in the laboratory, a colony count is performed using a 1 uL calibrated inoculating loop on 5% sheep blood agar; a MacConkey agar plate also is inoculated. At 24 hours, heavy growth of a lactose fermenter is observed on the MacConkey plate, revealing 140 colonies which are flat, grayish and nonhemolytic.
