Individuals are deeply impacted by law on a daily basis, and this fact is no less true when they navigate the healthcare system, or when an individual's actions are measured against the broader interests of the public's health. Over many decades, legal principles have been rejected, developed, and refined as the law continually struggles to define the appropriate relationship between individuals and the physicians, hospitals, managed care companies, and others they encounter in the healthcare delivery system, and between individuals and government agencies charged with protecting public health and welfare.
