The Battle of Hastings, which resulted in the defeat of the Anglo-Saxon Rulers during the Norman Invasion of England is a prime example. The writings of William of Poitiers, William of Jumieges, and Orderic Vitalis serve as the main sources for information about the conflict. These writers, who were all Norman , were out to celebrate the Norman victory and present the Norman Conquest in a positive light. These stories are thus slanted in favor of the Norman perspective and conceal any data that would be harmful to the Normans. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the sole surviving Anglo-Saxon source, was written after the conflict and is therefore more likely to have been influenced by Norman ideology, which further emphasizes this one-sided perspective. The effects of this skewed technique are vast and deep. The Norman viewpoint and the narratives of three Norman writers account for a significant portion of the information we have regarding the Battle of Hastings. Due to the propaganda and ideology of the Normans permeating much of the material, it is hard to really comprehend the war and its larger context. Additionally, it is hard to have a unbiased account of the conflict since the sole Anglo-Saxon source that has survived was written after the conflict and is probably significantly influenced by Norman philosophy.
