Scenario: Imagine a 56-year old CEO of an extremely successful company (or the head of a large hospital, etc.) waking up one morning. All of a sudden, he or she says to themselves, "I am not who I used to be. Who am I now? What have I become? How have I ended up here?"
Now consider this passage by Kierkegaard: "The greatest hazard of all, losing one's self, can occur very quietly in the world, as if it were nothing at all. No other loss can occur so quietly; any other loss - an arm, a leg, five dollars, a wife, etc. - is sure to be noticed."
Reflect and discuss such a scenario in light of Kierkegaard's passage.
Possible questions to reflect on initially:
1. What might this CEO be referring to?
2. Where might this individual have started in life?
3. What kinds of decisions or life choices might he or she have made in the last 30 years?
4. Where might this individual have come to now, after all these years?
5. Is it more likely that he or she is better or worse off now?
