Ethical dilemmas in medicine are becoming more common place due to the increased longevity of life, the use of advanced technology and the ability to treat a multitudes of disease processes that were once terminal. As an Advanced Practice Nurse, your scope of practice now extends to prescribing treatment or diagnosing terminal conditions that might lend itself to an ethical dilemma involving the patient and/or the family.

Ethical dilemmas present across the lifespan from the very premature neonate to the demented terminal geriatric patient, we are faced with providing the education and rationale to both families and patients as they plan their course of treatment.
