1. What is the difference between summarizing and paraphrasing? When would you use each skill in a counseling session?
2. Can you think of times during a session in which you might choose to use one skill over the other, and why it might be more appropriate to use that skill?
3. What does it mean to reflect upon feelings in a counseling session? What are some methods or practices that can help counselors reflect feelings in session?
4. In your post you described the reflection of feelings as being, "...similar to paraphrasing but the central focus is the client's emotions rather than the content of the discussion", and you stressed that, "This is important in which I do not feel that the clients emotions/feelings are always verbally communicated..." I agree, it is common for clients to not discuss their emotions and feelings and it is usually the case that they are unsure what their feeling are.
In this way, reflecting feelings is often about discussing the emotions we see them demonstrating through body language or reducing the content of their conversation to the emotions involved with what they are explaining or describing. If someone is telling us about a difficult experience they had at the grocery store (thinking about the skills video from week 1) we might respond to that account by trying to attach a feeling to that experience by stating, "I can imagine that might have made you feel _________."
Effective therapy depends on the ability of the therapist to artfully combine the basic counseling skills we are discussing into a cohesive blend of interpersonal communication which serve to facilitate the therapeutic process. With this in mind, how do you think you would combine the skills of paraphrasing and reflection of feelings when working with a client?
