Question

The healthcare field has substantially changed over the years in my perspective. I feel that humanities can help teach students empathy, to keep an open mind and to form deeper connections with patients all while maintaining joy in what they do. (Martignoni, 2012) Medicine, in my opinion has turned into a get them in, get them out approach. This causes many misdiagnosed patients, less bed side manor and more hospital costs as patients who returns to a hospital for readmission within a week of discharge means to me they were not taken care of the correct way the first time. It is mind blowing the condition that the patients are sent home in. Some, unable to ambulate without help at home, some still in the same condition as they showed up in and because they are not critical they get discharged to follow up with their primary care provider's who essentially do not have the means to evaluate them for their specialist issue and then the poor patient waits longer for a treatment plan and a referral to the specialist. When thinking about arts and humanities, visuals encourage multiple perspectives and time to think "outside the box" sort.
