Suppose that a police officer stops a person who "looks funny." The person acts strangely, so the police officer decides to frisk him. The officer feels a bulge in the suspect's coat pocket, which turns out to be a bag of cocaine. After reading all of the material the material in the text (and doing any other research that you like).

Answer the following questions: Do you believe that the arrest for cocaine possession would hold up in court? Explain why or why not? Explain what "probable cause" means. When may a law enforcement officer search without a warrant? When may a law enforcement officer make an arrest without a warrant?

Looking at the Terry ruling (Terry v. Ohio), plus other terms used in the accompanying material, explain your definition of the following terms. Please make sure that you thoroughly research and review Terry v. Ohio. "Specific and articulable facts" "Rational inferences" "Reasonableness" "Totality of the circumstances" "Inferences and deductions" What would you have done in the officer's place with the funny looking suspect? Be explicit. What circumstances can you think of that might have made the suspect "look funny" to the police officer? Again, be explicit, try to think of this from a law enforcement officer's standpoint.
