Question: The United States was founded as the result of a successful military challenge against the British. However, a second "American Revolution" followed up the original revolution when the Civil War resulted in a fundamental realignment of the relationship between the federal government and the states creating in effect a different country. And still these two great military top down revolutions pale in comparison in their cultural effects when compared with the social revolutions of the twentieth century.
