Instruction:
In this assignment you will select a text which you will work with and research for the duration of our course. Your completed essay is due in Week 6. Review the full assignment details for the essay before choosing a text.
While this is a short assignment, please do not assume it is an easy one. Take time to review the list of possible texts. Be sure you choose one that you are interested in. Once you select your text, you will not be able to change it.
There are two parts to this assignment. Be sure to read and follow the instructions for each part as you complete the assignment. Both parts will be submitted in the same Word document.
For the proposal:
Choose one of the texts in the provided list. If you choose a poet, you will need to read at least 5 short poems to analyze in the essay.
In the Word document, address the following items.
What culture is the text from/about? When and where was it first composed?
What are your first impressions of the work based on preliminary reading? (You are not required to read the work in its entirety, but you should have a working knowledge of the characters and plot.)
What do you think this text will teach you about how being a "good person" varies depending on cultural context? Do you think that some values are universal?
For the Annotated Bibliography:
Develop an annotated bibliography, using MLA style, for the two (2) sources that will be used to support your essay. (These are two sources in addition to the text you've selected in Part I.) As you begin your research, you will probably need to look for more general research like "women's roles in tenth century Persia" or "the motif of disguise in ancient Sumer." Use your research to dig into whether the qualities of the character you've chosen would be considered valuable in that culture.
An annotated bibliography is a brief, concise description and evaluation of a list of sources. Each source in this list should be described in one paragraph (100-150 words) to evaluate its authority, quality, and relevance to your project.
In your assignment, make sure to annotate at least 2 scholarly, peer-reviewed sources. If you have any doubt about whether the articles you've found are peer-reviewed, check with the professor. Cite the source first in the MLA style and then write a one-paragraph annotation with the following points:
The author's credentials
The findings and conclusions of the study
The relevance of the study to your research project
List the sources in alphabetical order (of the authors' last names)
Each annotation should be one paragraph of 100-150 words in length
