Question: Imagine you're approached by Chancellor Christ for guidance on the highly controversial figure, Milo Yiannopoulos, who has been invited by a student group to speak at UC Berkeley next semester. She wants to know what you, as a student of John Stuart Mill, would advise her to do. The university is committed to protecting freedom of speech, but she is concerned about protests that could endanger public safety and the impact of Yiannopoulos' speech on members of the campus community in light of his history of offensive remarks, such as saying that men shouldn't be expelled from universities for groping women and naming and ridiculing a transgender student in the audience at the University of Wisconsin. Chancellor Christ knows that hate speech is legally protected under the First Amendment. In your paper, she wants to know what you think is the morally right course of action. In particular, she wants to know: (a) What's the strongest argument for permitting Yiannopoulos to speak on campus? (b) What's the strongest argument for cancelling the event in advance? (c) How do you weigh these arguments against each other and what do you recommend that she do?
