Tragedy & Fences
In a short essay (about 3 paragraphs), answer this question: Using Aristotle's definition of tragedy, does August Wilson's play Fences "count" as a tragedy? Support your answer with a short paraphrase of Aristotle's definition of tragedy and a specific discussion of the play. This section is designed to take 25-30 minutes to complete.

Why Read Literature?
Imagine that a skeptical friend said this to you: "What's the point of studying literature, anyway? Isn't it all made up? Why not read nonfiction or study a practical subject, so you can actually learn something? Besides, isn't interpretation up to the reader -- so anybody can make anything mean whatever they want it to mean? Reading literature is just escapism, and it's not worth your time or energy."

Write a short response (2-3 paragraphs) to your friend that expresses your point of view on the value of studying literature. Support your answer with at least 3 examples from class: texts we've studied, conversations we've had in class, or realizations you've had while reading. This section is designed to take 25-30 minutes to complete.
