Question: Even though there has been an attempt by the government to improve the quality of care for patients, current trends suggest quality will actually get worse with time. The primary reason for an expected decrease in quality is under staffing. People are living longer, developing more chronic conditions, and now with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), having greater access to care. In addition to more people needing medical care, there are other issues contributing to staffing issues. There is a shortage of primary care physicians related to less individuals pursing such a career. The debt incurred is no longer outweighed by salaries earned, and as a result, more students are pursuing specialist careers. There is also a shortage of professors to teach medical classes because more money is earned directly in the field. Another issue pointed out by Anderson (2014), is younger physicians are less dedicated and don't work as hard as their older counterparts.
