Case Study: The first 6 chapters of Give Me Liberty! review the establishment of colonial America, beginning with European "discovery" in 1492 and leading all the way up to the American Revolution that began in 1776. Foner highlights various cultural and intellectual elements that led the American colonists to develop a sense of resentment towards British leadership: The "Rights of Englishmen" that they felt entitled to (Ch. 3), the Enlightenment (Ch. 4), and the arguments of men like Thomas Paine in Common Sense which encouraged the colonists to seek independence, to name a few.

Question: Explain what you think the most important factor was in terms of shifting the colonial mindset towards independence and revolution. What action(s), idea(s), or event(s) were most influential in turning the once-loyal British colonists in America against the King? Why did this particular event/action/idea have a greater impact than other notable events in our history?
