Problem: Analysis of Things Fall Apart Novel by Chinua Achebe Essay
Achebe writes a powerful novel about the process of assimilating Western culture and religion into a traditional Nigerian village. Your task is to do the following:
I. If you want, give an introductory paragraph summarizing in a nutshell, in your own words, what the book is about.
II. Describe, from Okonkwo's perspective, what you think are the most important two or three values of his society. What surprises you or shocks you about these values? Do you agree with them?
III. Explain, from Okonkwo's perspective, what was lost when the White Man came to his village. How did the village change while he was away?
IV. Finally, explain whether you think that the changes that took place were inevitable or not. Could the end of the book have been different if someone other than Mr. Smith would have come to the village? If so, how could things have turned out differently? Or was the end inevitable because of the way the West came to Africa? If so, why was this the case?
