Question: As we wrap up this discussion for the week, I wanted to make some summary comments about our discussion of professional growth. Various areas recognized for professional growth include family law, immigration and refugee counselling, working with resistance, and addressing the cultural differences between arranged marriages and marriages of choice. Another area that I find some students struggle with is grief counselling. In particular, I think it is important to realize that grief does not just encompass death losses, but also non-death losses such as moving to a new school or the loss of a job. Smith and Delgado (2019) define non-death losses as "the real or perceived deprivation of something deemed meaningful" (p. 120). When understanding that grief can encompasses more losses than just death, our perspective on grief begins to shift and we can see traces of grief throughout our client's lives.
