Recast the language from a passage in a work that you are reading.
Uncover meanings or implications that are not overt in the work that you are paraphrasing.

DIRECTIONS: Read a selection carefully and then respond to the prompts below. Your instructor may assign a specific work for you to read, or you may choose a selection from the Additional Thematic Readings for Writing Analytically folder in your MindTap course. You can learn more about Paraphrase x 3 and see examples of Paraphrase x 3 being applied to works in Chapter 2 of the eBook.

What do you want to paraphrase? Select a short passage from the work that you are reading; this passage may be as brief as a phrase, or a single sentence, or a couple of sentences. Consider selecting a passage that you find interesting, puzzling, or notable in some way. Write this passage below.
What does it say? Find synonyms for all the key words in the passage that you've selected to paraphrase. Rewrite the passage below, substituting all key terms, word for word, with words of very similar meaning.
Again, what does it say? Rewrite the passage at least two more times, using different synonyms and different language for each paraphrased version. You want to be thinking about the meaning of the passage as you are creating each paraphrase.
Which paraphrase works best? Choose one of your paraphrased passages (from Question #2 or #3) that you think is the most effective restatement of the original passage. Briefly explain why you selected this paraphrase.
What do you understand? Explain what you now believe the meaning of the original passage is. Also, describe how your understanding of the original passage has changed or evolved as a result of creating several paraphrases of it. Which words were the most "slippery," or hardest to restate in your own language?
