In this group assignment / discussion, you will investigate variants in genes that can affect certain chemical dependencies. You will make two initial posts, and one summary post. In your initial posts you will contribute information about SNPs related to nicotine dependence, and in your final post you will summarize the findings from your and your peers' submissions. (See below for more detail).
Background Information
To better understand where you can find this type of information, consider these examples for SNPs associated with alcohol response. The first example is a paper that discusses SNPs related to alcohol metabolism.
Here are a few more resources that list SNP data to demonstrate how genetic variations and alcohol dependence correlate and as you can see even genetic variations of opioid receptor and neurotransmitter genes can cause physical and psychological alcohol dependence:
In light of what you learned about genetic variation, health, and chemical dependencies, how about other chemical dependencies like cigarette smoking?
In this group work, you will find potential SNPs associated nicotine dependence. Limit your results to SNPs found in genes that are involved in the detoxification pathways of the 400+ chemicals found in nicotine and potentially affect the way we respond to cigarette smoking.
Initial Post
Post potential SNPs found in genes which can be involved in nicotine dependence and detoxification pathways used to detoxify chemical from nicotine.
Be sure to refer to the publication and the major findings for those SNPs (Use AMA style references).
Pay special attention to what kind of population was used for the study.
Note, similar to typical module discussions, you won't be able to see your classmate's posts until you submit at least one of your own.
