Question: The criminal justice system, and especially the police, have played a significant role in the history of racial and ethnic unrest and related riots in the United States. Sometimes the behavior of the police has sparked riots; sometimes unfounded rumors about the police have sparked riots.
Whatever their origin, riots have also mobilized the police to take some kind of responsive action, and exactly how the police have responded has varied. Sometimes, the police have taken on rioters aggressively, sometimes they have done so with more restraint, and sometimes they have done little if anything to stop the rioters.
Below, you will find a specific American race or ethnic riot that you have been assigned to study. Please research when this riot occurred; what triggered it; how the police and the rest of the criminal justice system responded to it; how it ended; and what it cost overall in lives and property.
Based on what you learn about the riot, please suggest how policing might be improved to reduce the likelihood of riots and to bring them to a speedier and more peaceful resolution when and if they do occur in the future. Laura La Bianca -- Jackson State University Riot, 1970
