Problem:
Review the termoplastic investment casting pattern which is required for the casting of the part shown in Figure I. Please answer the following questions about the manufacture of this pattern with additive manufacturing:
(a) Based on what you know about Additive Manufacturing which additive manufacturing technology would you use to produce described pattern?
(b) Let's assume fused deposition modeling (FDM) is chosen for the manufacturing. Which material would you chose to produce the pattern shown in Figure 1 and why? Consider the diameter of the filament as D, and length of the wall which heats the filament by conduction from a constant temperature as L.
Question 1. Make an order of magnitude estimate of titan., the time required to heat the filament at the centerline to within 90% of the wall temperature, Ting.
Question 2. Now estimate the mass flow rate if length L is moved forward every time
Question 3. How does the mass flow rate depend on the diameter of the filament D?
Question 4. How does the mass flow rate depend on the length of the heating element L?
(c) Compare the strength of a 3D printed part with an injection molded part? Please do not forget to consider the mold filling sequence and locations of the gate and well lines.
(d) Please compare the surfiwe and dimensional quality of a 3D printed pan with an injection molded part? Please provide sonic methods to improve surface and dimensional quality.
