Question 1. Based on what you have learned about the authority of the family, explain why teachers are allowed to exert corporal punishment on students, and discuss an argument families might make against the use of corporal punishment in schools.
Question 2. When it comes to understanding families, how are structural functionalists and the different conflict theoretical perspectives (Marxist, Weberian, queer/radical feminist) different? Based on what you read in the chapter, and my lecture (on the ppt for chapter 1) contrast how these various theories might explain the rise of the breadwinner-homemaker family, and the importance of heterosexual marriage in our society.
Question 3. Identify two major social trends in the historical development of the American family from colonial to contemporary times, explaining why they are significant. Be sure to use not only the material in the textbook, but also, the material from my lectures/ppt for chapter 2 (involving the nature and the motives for creating the early modern bourgeois family, vs. the contemporary corporate-guided family and childrearing philosophies)
Question 4. Evaluate the role of religion, particularly the Christian church, on family norms and values in the nineteenth century.
Question 5. Describe the impact of slavery on the family structure of African Americans throughout U.S. history.
Question 6. Analyze the impact of the Industrial Revolution on family structure, paying particular attention to family structure, social class, and gender roles. Be sure to use material from my lectures as well as the textbook.

Question 8. Discuss the social construction of childhood, and of childrearing, evaluating the experiences of children throughout U.S. history as a reflection of broader cultural values. Be sure to use material from my lectures as well as the textbook, and discuss the differences between the lower and middle classes on childrearing as we discussed in class.
Question 9. Describe the causes and consequences of the increased physical separation and weakening of extended families after the Industrial Revolution. Be sure to use material from my lectures as well as the textbook.
Question 10. Evaluate the myths and realities of the idealized "traditional" nuclear family in U.S. history.
Question 11. Analyze the social forces and cultural values that led to changes in courtship practices between colonial and modern times. Be sure to use the excerpt from Christopher Lasch's Haven in a Heartless World on the "rating and dating" complex (concept by Willard Waller)
