Persuasive Action Presentation
Description
Persuasive Action Presentation (5 - 6 minutes): Develop a 5 - 6 minute persuasive presentation in a problem-solution format, employing all the steps of Monroe's Motivated Sequence: attention, need, satisfaction, visualization, and action. You will persuade their audience to take action on a need relevant to the role belief systems play in U.S. life while exploring a concept(s) of religion, philosophy, ethics, and/or epistemology. This presentation will draw attention to, describe the need for, discuss how the need can be satisfied, describe the future if no action is taken, and ask the audience to take action regarding the role belief systems play in U.S. life. This presentation will draw attention to the need, describe the need, discuss how the need can be satisfied, visualize the future if the need is addressed, and ask the audience to take action.
Requirement
This speech is the culmination of what you have learned about oral communication. You should keep in mind all the elements of effective public speaking when preparing and rehearsing the presentation. The topic of the speech should address an interesting and important issue appropriate for the college audience. Credible sources should support all controversial arguments. The proposed solution to the problem identified in the speech should be feasible and implementable.
Instructions
The presentation must include a properly formatted and grammatically correct formal outline, including three (3) academic sources to support main ideas. The outline includes all five elements of Monroe's Motivated Sequence with appropriate evidence for each element, which are then translated to a speaking outline and delivered as the speech. All sources from outside research should be cited orally in the presentation and in writing using APA style on the presentation outlines. In addition, you should demonstrate mastery of extemporaneous speaking skills in all aspects of delivery.
This presentation requires you to implement presentation software as a visual aid (5 - 6 content slides and reference list slide). Slides for this presentation should be developed as assertion-evidence based design. Images must be high-quality, and font and color palate should be clean, readable, and professional.
You will continue to develop your skills in composing detailed formal outlines. The complete formal outline is used to prepare for this presentation and is submitted before the presentation. The instructor may elect to require the outline submission a designated period of time before the presentation.
Monroe's Motivated Sequence
Keeping your audience foremost in your mind, you will organize your speech using the Monroe's Motivated Sequence organizational pattern to influence and persuade them. There are other organizational patterns for persuasive speaking, however, we will be focusing on Monroe's Motivated Sequence in this class. When used properly, this organizational pattern is fool-proof. Your goal for this speech will be to gain immediate action. In your speech on the 'overpopulation of animals' to gain immediate action, you can ask your audience to foster a shelter animal, donate food and requested items to their local shelter or simply talk to friends and family about the importance of spaying/neutering pets.
