Question: The book notes, "Perhaps the Spaniards' most fundamental military advantage was their concept of war... European viruses proved to be at least as significant as military technology." (p. 41) Is the book correct to separate viruses from the military as viruses allowed them to conquer and the Spanish were at least aware of how the Mexicans viewed them as immortal? Is this an early use of biological warfare, even thought the Spanish did not create or directly release the viruses? How does this picture compare to what you have heard before about the invasion of Cortes? Would an account from the Mexican point of view further inform the story or is it not necessary? 2 This book looks at the Southern Colonies (chapter 3) before looking at the Northern colonies, chapter 4, although an equally good case could be made for the reverse, or at looking more at early Spanish and French colonies. Does this focus on the South first match what you've learned before? If not, what did you focus on? What purpose might an author have in looking first at the North before the South and what purpose might they have for the reverse?
