2. Read the supplement: "Gangsta Rap and American Culture" by Michael Eric Dyson.

3. Read the supplement: "Hidden Politics: Discursive and Institutional Policing of Rap Music" by Tricia Rose.

4. Answer Questions.

Question 1 - Both Dyson and Rose are African-Americans, and both are highly respected academic scholars and individuals. It is clear that they have thought about the issue of hip-hop music a lot. You, on the other hand, likely come to this issue not having had a chance or reason to give it considerable thought. Do you think there are aspects of their argument that you can and should adopt in your own thinking? What do you learn from these two readings that gives you a fuller and more nuanced understanding of this issue? Explain your answer clearly and fully. (Be certain to make reference to your own knowledge of hip-hop music if you have any.)

Question 2 - Contact a mature person that you highly respect and who, you suspect, has a strong opinion on classical or popular music. Ask him or her whether classical music is better than popular music and find out why they think as they do. (That is, see if you can get them to broadly explain their answer.) In your paragraph response, report what you discovered from your interview, and reflect on how the position of the person you spoke with is different from or similar to your own current position on this question

Question 3 - Both Dyson and Rose seem to be neither for nor against this style of music. Even while they seem to accept that it accommodates the expression of deplorable sentiments, they seem unwilling to condemn it outright. Why is that? (Answer this provocation fully and carefully, making specific references to quotes from these two authors.)
