Question 1 Looked for obvious differences or errors to clarify the ideas for each other. Reflect on what you are learning, anticipating what you can use to prepare for writing your own critical analysis.
What I learned about refuting arguments and evaluating them, is that it is a very intricate process that requires steps of proofreading and questioning the validity of one's argument. Two important Critical thinking standards that are necessary when evaluating are accuracy & logical correctness. Accuracy asks the question as to whether the premises are false or true, whereas logical correctness provides the exercise of accepting whether or not the conclusion to a true premise is deemed acceptable.
Refuting an argument, however, requires much more analysis and critical thinking. To refute one is to show that the premises don't provide good enough reasons to accept a given conclusion. There are two methods or techniques used to refuting an argument. One, is with the purpose of showing that the premise given is false or invalid. Another is to identify if the logical support is present when providing conclusions. One way to help distinguish this is by identifying if any fallacies are present when examining the texts. (207-209) This can help determine if any hasty generalizations or two wrong fallacies such as, are present, making them easily identifiable invalid arguments. It is always wise to question if the premise is true, and even if so, does the conclusion provide enough logical support for it to not be refuted. A great way to help break down and evaluate the text of the claim that you are trying to refute is by making the text in Standarization. This can allow the student or reader to closely examine and follow the premise, as well as evidence and support required for a valid conclusion. This can be seen as usage of deductive reasoning, a method for argument evaluations that can be extremely helpful. (Perez 3, Argument Analysis Evaluation)
Question 2. Looked for obvious differences or errors to clarify the ideas . Reflect on what you are learning, anticipating what you can use to prepare for writing your own critical analysis.
What I learned about refuting arguments and reading both essay I see a comparison of two different ways. Two important critical standards that are necessary when evaluating are accuracy and logical. If an argument is conconsisint at least on of its claims must be false. Strictly speaking therefore consistency is included in the standard of accuracy and is not separate in its own right. Inconsistency is such important and pervasive from of inaccuracy that is useful for our purpose to treat it as a separate standard.
One exceptions should be noted here. In some arguments the premises may still be provided good reason for the conclusion even though the argument contains a premise that is false.Accuracy asks the questions as to whether the premises are false or true, logical correctness provides the exercise of accepting the conclusion to a true premise is deemed acceptable. In evaluating arguments of this sort the important question to keep in mind is do the premises provided enough evidence for the conclusion, do not provide educate support for the conclusion often this can be done by citing evidence not mentioned by the arguer that points to a different conclusion.
