Starting at birth, one of the first relationships that you are exposed to is that of your mother and father. For those who are given up for adoption or abandoned, the same holds, and even still, all will have some caregiver role in their lives. It is just not the biological definition of a mother or father. Basically, all babies have people in their lives who represent the role of a caretaker, whether it be by birth, choice, or simply one's job to be in that role. As Cragun and other writers (2012) explain, "Primary socialization takes place early in life, as a child and adolescent." (p. 84) This is where primary socialization begins: mother, father, grandparents, siblings, and any family relationship. It is what will set the foundation for what you will believe in initially and where you get your values, or lack thereof, from. These early years will be your first understanding and influence on how you feel about religion, politics, race, sexuality, and so many other views of the world. What you are exposed to day in and day out is the foundation that will be laid to establish what you feel about the world you live
