Problem: In the second half of Chapter 7, using The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mohandas Gandhi as examples, the authors discuss "Passing Over" as a particular way of being religious in this Postmodern/Globalized world. "This postmodern spiritual adventure occurs when we pass over into another's religion and culture and come to see the world through another's eyes. When we do this, we "come back" to our own religion and culture enriched with new insight not only into the other's religion and culture but also our own--insight that builds bridges of understanding, a unity in diversity between people of diverse religions and cultures." (Esposito p. 337 see also pp. 336-339). Do you agree with the authors regarding the value of "passing over?" What would you suggest as safeguards to preventing passing over from becoming a superficial eclecticism?
