Debbie is a HR Manager for a major retailer. She recruits and selects the associates who work in the store. Recently she met with the electronics department manager who needed an associate with experience in computer software. The electronics manager told Debbie that he met a girl at his college who is studying information systems. Debbie encouraged the manager talk to the student to see if she would be interested in interviewing for the position.
Later that week Melony called Debbie about the job opening in the electronics dept. She told Debbie she had heard about the job from the electronics manager. Debbie set up an interview for the next morning at 9am. Debbie had a strong feeling that this would be a good hire based on their brief telephone conversation.
At 9:25 the next morning, Melonyarrived for her interview. She came into Debbie's office wearing flips flops, a t-shirt and a nose ring. Against her instincts, Debbie went thru with the interview. During the interview, Melony presented herself as a creative and knowledgeable person. Debbie came away from her interview with Melony far more impressed that when she started.
Debbie decided to invite Melony to the new employee orientation the following morning. She was still worried about Melony's behavior from the day before. Her lateness to the interview and the inappropriate dress. Still the electronics dept needed someone with Melony's expertise and she was easily the best candidate. The new employee orientation began at 9 a.m. the next day. The small group gathered in the meeting room but Melony was nowhere to be found. After sending the orientation group to another room to complete paperwork, Debbie got a call from Melony. She told Debbie that she had overslept but she could be at the store by 10:30am.
If you were Debbie what would you say to Melony and how would you handle the situation.
