J.R. is a sedentary 38 year old man with ESRD secondary to Type 1 diabetes. BMI 38 and A1c 9. He is presenting today for a transplant work-up.

As a RDN, what MNT recommendations would you have for the pt? Be specific. List all avenues of intervention from what you are given above.

J.R. was able to lose weight to a BMI of 33 and found a living donor who was a match for a kidney. He has been told that he needs both a pancreas and kidney transplant. He has been told that he is safe to have a dual transplant in one procedure by the transplant team but is not sure what he should do.

What are the pros and cons that you would tell the pt between getting both organs in one procedure versus two procedures?

J.R. has decided that he will get the kidney from his living donor and wait for his pancreas for a second procedure.
