You are working in the ED of a level 1 trauma center when you get a call for an incoming drowning patient being brought in by EMS. EMS states the patient was intoxicated at a local block party when he dove head first into a public pond. The patient is a 34 year old male 5' 8" weighing 80kg. Upon first inspection the patient is unconscious and unresponsive being manually ventilated with a BVM. Audible gurgling sounds are heard from across the room. Vital signs : BP 78/58 mmHg HR: 155 bpm RR: 12 bpm. SPO2 79% Temp 29 degrees C. What would you do first?
