5yr Rule Assignment
Peter Gerhardt speaks of the importance of a "5 Year Rule." In other words, if we expect a person with ASD to use a skill, it needs to be taught 5 years before expected use.
(1) If you had to choose 5 skills critical to successful adulthood, which need to be addressed early and often, what would they be? Why these?
(2) How could teachers introduce these in early childhood, elementary school, middle school, and high school?
(3) Are there reasons these skills may not be attended to as much as they should?
Justify your answer with specific examples.
(4) What would you do as a teacher to advocate for focus on these skills with other educational professionals, school administrators, and families?
Reflect on reasons why it is critical to provide individualized and comprehensive sexuality education for people with ASD.
Chapter 14 Question- Math

Lesson 13- Sexuality
How would you bring up this need to family members?
Seek an online resource to share with family members regarding the teaching of sexuality,
abuse, and relationship safety.
Share your rationale for choosing this resource
The failure to develop healthy sexuality through appropriate sexuality education can put individuals with ASD at risk for sexual abuse and exploitation, AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), unplanned and unwanted pregnancies, and misinformation (Ailey et al., 2003; McDaniels & Fleming, 2016).
