Alan and Betty are considering getting married either December 28, 2016 or January 3, 2017. What would their income tax for 2016 be if they got married on January 3, 2013? If they got married on December 28, 2016 what would their tax be married filing joint or married filing separately. Their financial info for 2016 is: Alan Betty Salary 235,000 215,000 Itemized deductions 43,000 4,500 Alan lives alone but is supporting his brother who was in jail and now lives in a residence for ex-cons. He works in a restaurant on weekends and earns $500 a week. He is saving this for his own apartment and Alan sends the residence 2,400 a month for his food and shelter. Betty is the sole supporter of her mother who lives in a retirement community in Georgia. Mother’s social security check of 300 a month goes to the community. In addition Betty pays $1,500 per month for her mom’s care. Neither Alan nor Betty have any dependent children living with them. Both are in their 50’s.
