Ethics Question - Suppose you have two choices. You can spend your life savings on a very expensive operation and save the life of a person you love, your spouse or child, say. Or you can spend it on a less expensive operation and save the lives of 10 strangers who, without your donation, will die. Is it morally permissible to spend the money on the person you love, knowing that it means that 10 people will die? Is this a selfish act? What would the ethical egoist say? If it is permissible for you to not save the 10 people in order to save your loved one, are there any ethical limits to what you may do to save your loved one? Is it morally permissible to kidnap and kill a healthy stranger and take their liver because your child or spouse needs a transplant, there are no liver transplants available, and your child or spouse will die without it? If you are not permitted to kill a person to save your spouse or child, why are you permitted to let 10 people die when you could save them? How would an ethical egoist answer these questions? Would she be right?
