Assignment:
As best you can, describe what you believe are important elements to the case below, and what you would focus on if you were the treating clinician. Finally, if you had to pick a diagnosis for this client, what would it be and why?:
Catherine enters therapy because her husband has asked her to go. As she sits in front of the therapist, she laughs nervously. "I'm not exactly sure why I'm here. I just know that my husband thinks I need help."
As the therapist prompts her to explain a bit more about her life, she goes into detail about being nervous to leave the house. She describes being more comfortable at home, and that when she is in public, it is always so taxing on her. "The traffic, the people, the waiting - all of it. It's just too much!"
She also describes having to check the stove before leaving, as well as triple checking all of the locks. This behavior, she describes, is something she wants to do - and says, "Imagine if I'm the one responsible for a break-in or the apartment catching on fire? I need to check."
Catherine next describes her family of origin. Catherine's parent's split up when she was 7 years old and after their divorce, she had to spend equal time with both parents, however, she hated going to her father's home. Her father was controlling, angry and often made her spend time with him, even though he acted like he didn't like her. He would yell at her, berate her, and never let her go anywhere. Her mother, on the other hand was a "total hippie." She was rarely home and left Catherine unattended for hours.
