Consider the following answer to a question where someone is asked to create a Gettier-style counterexample:
An individual, let's call her Sarah, is an avid conspiracy theorist. She has a belief that the government is hiding information about aliens from the public. She has read countless articles and watched countless videos on the topic and has spoken to other believers. She is convinced that this is true and has no doubt about it.
In this scenario, Sarah's belief that "p" (the government is hiding information about aliens from the public) satisfies all three conditions of the JTB theory:
• Sarah's belief is true (she has no doubt about it)
• Sarah's belief is justified (she has read countless articles and watched countless videos on the topic and has spoken to other believers.)
• Sarah's belief is caused by her research and speaking to other believers.
However, in this scenario, Sarah does not represent a genuine case of knowing that 'p' because her belief is based on misinformation and lack of evidence. Even though her belief is true, it is not based on any evidence or facts that can support it.
(1) What grade would you give this answer (out of 10)?
(2) What would be your reasons for assigning this grade?
