The interaction between bases on different strands of DNA molecules depends somewhat on the identities of neighboring bases. For example, the melting temperature of an oligonucleotide with the sequence GGGGGAAAAA is different than that of GAGAGAGAGA even though both contain the exact same number of G-C and A-T base pairs. (The melting temperature is the temperature at which half of the base pairs are broken between the oligonucleotide and its complementary sequence). Therefore, instead of treating a DNA helix as a string of interactions between base pairs, many thermodynamic algorithms that calculate DNA melting temperatures use the nearest-neighbor model, which treats a DNA helix as a string of interactions between 'neighboring' base pairs. Thus the sequence GGCTGC consists of the nearest neighbors GG, GC, CT, TG and GC. The nearest-neighbor frequencies of a certain double stranded DNA molecule are: AG, 0.15; GT, 0.03; CC, 0.08, and TT, 0.10. In each case the nearest neighbor is written in the 5'?3' direction. What would be the nearest neighbor frequencies of CT, AC, GG and AA?

In the tubular flowers of foxgloves, wild type coloration is red while a mutation called whit manufactures white flowers. Another mutation, called peloria, causes the flowers at the apex of the stem to be big.
Think about that all mice were increased in identical enviornments and they are as genetically similar as identical twins, why didn't all of the mice score the same on the behaviors we measured?
If evolution occurs by natural selection, then, there must be variation among organisms. Why was Darwin unable to gather evidence to determine if this prediction made by the hypothesis was true or false? What has changed since Darwin's time that w..
The condition "xeroderma pigmentosum" is characterized by high rates of skin cancers like malignant melanoma. It is caused by mutations in any of many genes that encode enzymes that participate in:
Four proteins, each having a single polypeptide, are separated by SDS-PAGE: human cytochrome c , human serum albumin, bovine myoglobin.
Explain the differences in population growth patterns of the two paramecium species. What does this tell you about how Paramecium aurelia uses available resources.
A double-stranded fragment of viral DNA, one of whose strands is shown below, encodes two polypeptides called vir-1 and vir-2. Adding this double stranded DNA fragment to an in vitro transcription and translation system yields peptides of 10 residues
Explain the role of the citric acid cycle as a central metabolic mechanism. Explain what happens to the cells' abilities to oxidize acetyl CoA when intermediates of the cycle are drained off for amino acid biosynthesis.
