Question - CS Managing Up Discussion
Description - Case studies are about answering the question: "What would you do" or "What would you advise to do if consulted"
In this case study, you are advising on Managing Up (that is, managing your supervisor). To effectively manage up, employees need to do three things. First, employees have to understand themselves, which includes their career stage, the way they react to authority and how their actions influence the leader. Second, employees have to understand the leader, especially in terms of career stage, decision-making style, specific goals and challenges, and past performance. Third, employees have to build an exchange relationship. Leaders have power that employees do not; thus, it is important for employees to leverage that power. Only an employee who has a high self-awareness and a strong understanding of the boss will be able to ask for and earn the support that is needed to meet his or her own needs.
Guiding questions to be answered:
1. In order to effectively manage up, what things should Grace understand about herself?
2. In order to effectively manage up, what things should Grace understand about Landon?
3. Should Grace send that email to Bill (Discuss why or why not)?
4. What would be the likely impact on Landon? On Grace?
5. Imagine Grace has come to you for help. Develop a plan for her to manage her relationship with Landon in order to meet her career goals. (Hint: leaving the company is not an appropriate response in this case as that's not managing a relationship).
