Case Study: The case presented is a 37-year-old African American Male who has been married for the past 7 years. Life was going extremely well for the client and his wife leading up to the exciting news of expecting their first child together. As with any expectant couple they were over the moon with joy until the wife was diagnosed with a heart condition discovered during pregnancy. The wife was adopted as a baby and had no medical history of her biological parents. The client was very supportive of his wife during this sensitive time and through a number of procedures, monitoring, and close encounters the couple welcomed a baby boy.
The stress of 9 months brought about major concerns and bouts of anxiety for the client to include excessive worrying, panic attacks to include excessive breathing trembling, shaking, shortness of breath, and trembling. The client handled all of these episodes in silence in an effort to be strong for his wife. The first year proved to be the most challenging for the client as this was his first child. Over the course of the first year the symptoms became more uncontrollable and intense. The client began to notice delayed developmental issues with the child. The client blamed himself for the child's inability to talk and advance as other children in his family around the same age seemed to excel in. Recently, the proud parents were given the difficult diagnosis that their son is experiencing symptoms of Autism. The client is at a loss and is afraid of what this diagnosis will do to him mentally. The clients presents in a session that his wife would like to have another child. The client presents extreme concerns.
