Cognitions include our beliefs, assumptions, expectations, and ideas about the causes of events, attitudes, and perceptions in our lives. Walsh, 2014. Our cognition depends on our brain development. According to Walsh...2014, "a central concept in cognitive theory is that of the schema, defined as an internalized representation of the world, or patterns of thought, action, and problem solving ( Granvold, 1994)." We often make choices about what we think we like, and what we believe to be our own interest and stick to it until we find something new that we like. How we think also determines the way we act.
In a practice setting, social workers can use cognitive theory to help clients break their habits, change their personal goals to become more consistent with their capabilities, adjust their cognitive assumptions(beliefs and expectations), or change their habits of thinking (which includes giving up cognitive distortions). Walsh, 2014. If a client suffers from anxiety the social worker can help the client by finding out what triggers her anxiety and helping her with a coping mechanism. The social worker can also teach the client how to change her thoughts to focus on something else and how to control her breathing.
