Question - The backwards bicycle video was interesting to me. When I first watched the man try and ride it, I thought to myself that it looked easy. When I started to watch other people do it, it did not look so easy. I think it is important to realize that knowledge does not mean understanding. I also think that this video can relate to things in our lives and also to this class. When we look at addiction from the standpoint of not being addicted, we think that it should be easy to get clean. Then there are those who are actually addicted and realize it is not that easy. Just like I thought the bike would be easy, it really is not because I didn't even try it out so I really would not know if it were easy or not. I like that at the end of the video, he says that we look at the world through our own biases. You may think you are bias-free, but everyone has their own biases whether they are aware of them or not. I do think the video had a deeper meaning than just riding a backwards bicycle.
Classical conditioning can be helpful when it comes to addiction. For example, there may be a person who gets home from work, goes to their couch, has a beer, and smokes marijuana. This happens every day for the person, it is like a routine for them. Just getting home from work and sitting on the couch, reminds them to get a beer and smoke because of their addiction. With classical conditioning, this person can help the addiction by not engaging in the activity when reminded like when he sits on the couch. If this keeps continuing, eventually he will not have those cravings because he has conditioned himself to not have to have a beer and smoke when he sits on the couch.
