Assignment: Scholar-Practitioner Model
As mentioned in this week's introduction, you will experience the scholar-practitioner model in action. Capella uses this model as the foundation for our educational philosophy. According to Capella University's Scholar-Practitioner Educational Philosophy white paper, "The scholar-practitioner philosophy encompasses the activities of both learners and faculty. Learners and faculty are located on a continuum of learning experience that demonstrates their development and growth as reflective practitioners (bachelor's), practitioner-scholars (master's), and scholar-practitioners (doctoral)" (Capella University, 2003). As a master's learner, you will work toward becoming a practitioner-scholar. This learning model will guide your professional development, encouraging you to investigate and critically evaluate relevant theory and research to determine effective best practices that you will use on the job. It will help you establish a lifelong commitment to continually building relevant knowledge and skill in your areas of interest and specialization in psychology.
To familiarize yourself with this model, read the following:
• McClintock, C. (2004). Scholar practitioner model. In A. DiStefano, K. E. Rudestam, & R. J. Silverman (Eds.), Encyclopedia of distributed learning (pp. 394-397). Sage.
This laid the theoretical foundation for Capella's learning model.
• Capella's Learning Model Quick Reference and Examples [PDF], which provides an overview of Capella University's expectations for learners at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels.
Practitioner-Scholar In Action

• Consider how this learning model can guide your professional development, encouraging you to investigate and critically evaluate relevant theory and research to determine effective best practices that you will use on the job.
• Think about how it will help you establish a lifelong commitment to continually building relevant knowledge and skill in your areas of interest and specialization in psychology.
• The discussion this week provides the opportunity for you to probe the implications of the model for your program, your career, and your plan for how you will realize your goals.

• Exploring Your Role as a Capella Practitioner-Scholar
What did you learn about this week that grabbed your attention or caused you to think more deeply about it? As stated in this week's introduction, connecting scholarship and practice is critical for professionals in psychology. In one of the studies, you examined both the scholar-practitioner model, as presented in the McClintock article, and Capella's learning model, which is based on the ideas in the McClintock article. In Capella's learning model, the master's level degree program is described as practitioner-scholar, to distinguish it from the doctoral degree program, which is described as scholar-practitioner.
