Write: Your Own Obituary (250+ words)
This challenge exercise asks you to do your own obituary - what you would want written about you when you have passed away many, many years from now. Obituaries focus on the life of the person and rarely mention the death. Please focus on your life, legacy, and relationships. Write whatever comes to mind even if it feels like stream-of-consciousness. Use words, phrases, sentences. Don't over-think this exercise. Do not edit, censor, analyze or critique your thoughts. Take 10-15 minutes to this exercise. You will re-visit this exercise again in the future, so do not try to perfect your answer now.
Note: if you feel this assignment could cause you unwelcome anxiety or mental duress, please let me know, and I will provide you with an alternate assignment.
Questions you should ask yourself as you do this exercise:
1. What and/or who did you impact or change? Why?
2. What character traits and values did you consistently demonstrate over your life? At your core, who were you?
3. Who did you care for? How did you impact or change this person/these people?
4. What were major accomplishments in your life? At the ages of 40, 50, 60, 70?
5. What did you show interest in? What were you passionate or enthusiastic about?
6. What was your legacy?
After writing your own obituary, reflect on the process. This section should be written more formally in paragraph form. Here are some questions to consider in your reflection:
1. What did you consider as you wrote your narrative?
2. Can you summarize some the meanings and/or values that mattered to you as you wrote this?
3. What do you imagine makes your obituary different from your peers in this class?
4. What might make it similar to those written by your peers?
5. What kind of obituary would you hate to write?
6. Did you find this Challenge easy or hard? Why?
7. Why do you think we assigned this? How does it connect to your reading this week in the book the unseen things?
