ASSIGNMENT
Reading - Food system narratives to end hunger: extractive versus regenerative by Molly D Anderson and Marta Rivera-Ferre
Referring to the reading for this week, please respond to one of the prompts below:
1. Contrast "regenerative food systems" with "extractive food systems". Consider the role of economics, labor, technology, fossil fuel use, scale, power & profit, nutrition, culture, etc. in strategies for addressing hunger and ecological degradation and long-term sustainability
2. If industrial agriculture has so many documented unsustainable aspects (ecological and social), why do you think many scientists and policy makers support it. You can imagine why corporations support it, but why do the very well-educated professionals focused on "solving world hunger" continue strategies like sustainable intensification and sustainable food value chains based on neoliberal economic assumptions?
3. Compose and answer your own prompt that matches the quality of questions and responses required from above. This option is for when you got something out of the reading that you want to write about, but that I did not ask about.
PART 2.
1. Go to the Oakland Institute
2. Choose: Explore the Case Studies
3. Read any one of the 33 agroecology case studies that interests you. (The reports are very short.)
4. Brief Response: What were the specific agroecology practices employed? How did they increase resilience, improve strong sustainability, and/or provide synergistic benefits at multiple scales?
5. After reading the article and a case study, why do you think agroecology is framed by "many international development experts and agronomists" as "incapable of sufficient productivity to sustain world populations, or even anti-science, and thus not deserving of serious attention" Quote from this week's reading, Anderson & Rivera-Ferre (2021)
6. Further explore the website and blog posts if you are interested in food systems and transformation.
