Question 1. Rap and hip-hop began in the street culture of black neighborhoods in New York City in the 1970s. It has since gone on to become probably the most popular style of music of the past 40 years. Why? How and why has hip-hop remained relevant to audiences since the 1980s? How has it changed over this time? Is it as relevant in 2022 as it has been in the past?
Question 2. The Iranian Revolution of 1979 created a major crisis for the United States and President Carter, and it pointed to a dangerous new challenge in U.S. foreign relations. Why did the revolution happen in Iran, and how did the United States become entangled in it? How did the new situation in Iran impact the U.S. economy and politics?
Question 3. President Reagan gets a lot of credit from his supporters for "winning" the Cold War." Does he deserve it? Who was more responsible for peacefully winding down Cold War tensions: Reagan or Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev? Explain.
Question 4. Immigration once again emerged as a very controversial issue in the United States during the 1980s and continues to be to this day. Why? We began this course with a discussion about why this "land of immigrants" has often felt ambivalent about new immigrants coming to the United States. What is different, of the same, about recent concerns and debates over US immigration policies since the 1980s?
Question 5. President Bill Clinton secured the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), probably the most important trade deal since World War II. Although most Republicans and enough Democrats supported it at the time, there was much controversy when the US joined NAFTA. Why? What were the most beneficial results and the most damaging consequences that came out of NAFTA for the United States economy?
