1. Discussion - Ancient Egypt

Egypt is one of the world's oldest civilizations. It is where mankind first began building with cut stone and where many of our Western traditions were born. The discovery of the Rosetta stone in the 19th century unlocked many of its mysteries and opened up a boom in Egyptian studies.

What were the major accomplishments of the Egyptians and how can we use their teachings to understand our current lives? What were the various types of tombs and how do they each reflect the needs of their particular age?  What were the specific religious or political contributions to the development of Egyptian society and art?  What other aspects of Egyptian visual culture do you feel were important and continue to be important in understanding pre-Roman Egypt?

2. Discussion - The Prehistoric Aegean

The Ancient Aegean predates Ancient Greek civilization by several centuries.  Yet, even there, we can already see many of the precursors that formed the later, more well-known, Greek cultures of Athens, Sparta, and Corinth.  What sorts of distinctions do you notice among the various culture's material culture?  What are the similarities and/or differences among their visual culture such as depictions of the human body and movement? What can we learn about the way these people lived based on the objects and images they left behind?
