Part B - Short Answer Questions
You are required to provide written responses to 3 (three) of the 4 (four) questions below. Each question is worth 10 marks.
Your response to each question should be ¾ - 1 page in length (375 - 500 words).
In preparing your responses to these questions, you may need to access additional materials (articles, videos, reports, quizzes) that are available from the course Moodle page and/or the links in the questions.
Question 1
At the beginning of this course, we considered some of the major trends that have impacted the global business environment. Discuss the extent to which advances in information and communication technologies could help and hinder progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Question 2
Using the Hofstede Insights Country Comparison Tool, compare the cultural dimensions of Poland and Indonesia. Identify the three dimensions with the greatest difference between these countries and:
• Briefly describe each of these dimensions;
• Outline some practical strategies a manager of a global business from Poland could implement to accommodate these differences when engaging with a management team at a subsidiary organisation in Indonesia.
Question 3
In Week 8, the course materials identified four types of business risks associated with operating in the global environment - commercial risk, currency (financial) risk, country risk and cross-cultural risk.
At the end of 2019, global risk consultancy Control Risks published their Top 5 Risk Map for 2020. For each of these Top 5 Risks, you need to:
• Analyse each of the risks listed in the Top 5 Risks and identify which type of risk each of these risks represents;
• Give a brief example of where and how that risk has already eventuated in 2020;
• Briefly discuss how this risk could impact on global business operations;
• Suggest one or more strategies global businesses could adopt to manage that risk.
Question 4
In his 2016 TED Talk, Peter Anderton explained that great leadership came down to two rules:
1. It's NOT about you!
2. It's ONLY about you!
These rules seem very simple and somewhat contradictory - what did Anderton mean by these two rules?
Apply Anderton's rules for great leadership to a leadership role or experience you are familiar with. This could be a leadership role you have now or have had in the past, or it may be a time when you worked with or experienced another leader. Discuss this leadership experience in terms of the evidence or indicators that this leader DID OR DID NOT follow Anderton's rules.
Part C - Global Business Case Study
You are required to read the attached Global Business Case Study - Clayton Industries.
You then need to respond to two (2) of the questions below. Each question is worth 20 marks.
Your response to each question should be 1½ - 2 pages in length (750 - 1000 words).
Question 1
One of Peter Arnell's first actions as Country Manager (Italy) for Clayton SpA was to terminate the employment of its plant manager, the QC manager, and the company controller.
a. How do you think this action may have been perceived by stakeholders from inside and outside the company? Give reasons for your answers.
b. What were the strengths and weaknesses of Peter Arnell's attempts to engage with stakeholders through this situation?
Question 2
Three possible courses of action for Peter Arnell are outlined on the last page of the case.
a. Outline each of these options and discuss the extent to which these represent a departure (or significant change) from Clayton SpA's business strategy.
b. If you were in Peter Arnell's position, which plan would you recommend to Dan Briggs and Simonne Buis next week? Use evidence from the case study to justify your recommendation.
Question 3
Discuss the extent to which you believe Peter Arnell has been an effective leader.
a. What were some of Peter Arnell's personal characteristics and skills that would have appealed to Simonne Buis when she appointed Arnell as General Manager of Clayton SpA?
b. To what extent do you believe Arnell was the right choice for this role at this time? What were the strengths and weaknesses of his approach to leadership? Give reasons for your answer.
