Nurses at concord General have been complaining about the way the hospital administration treats them. On most occasions, an activity that goes beyond the call of duty is recognized with a certificate of "recognition'' signed by the MD John Michaels. It is also recognized that most activities are regarded to be beyond the call of duty. Every year, the hospital orders thousands of ''recognition'' certificates and distributes them to each department head. While the idea of recognition certificates might appear a good one, it has led to much frustration. As one nurse put it;
"I got four certificates yesterday, Big deal. It seems whatever we do, we get these things. They are supposed to be a reward. The only thing they are is a waste of time and money. I'd rather have nothing. I feel like a rabbit with a carrot dangling in front of me. Besides, what will they get me anyway?"
Realizing that most nurses felt the same way, Judy, the new manager, has put an end to the use of these certificates.
