Assignment: Let's talk a bit about John Braithwaite's concept of "reintegrative shaming" from this module's study of labeling. This is particularly valuable in discussions of juvenile delinquency, when -- it is hoped/believed -- the offender has a better chance of rehabilitation. Suppose there is a 16-year old boy in the community where you live who has had some minor trouble with the law in the past (vandalism, truancy, etc.). However, one night, this boy sees a car running outside of a store with no driver in it. On impulse, he jumps in and goes for a joyride, later on wrecking the car and causing several thousand dollars' worth of damage. Juvenile courts have "adjudicated him delinquent" (which is their way of saying that he's responsible), and have ordered that he remain in a juvenile detention facility until his 18th birthday.

Well, that day is here. He is now 18, and about to be released. Based on what we know about labeling and reintegrative shaming, how would you propose to reintegrate this person back into the community, if at all? How could citizens, schools, business help? How might you help? Or, would you not help?
